Freezing Actions in Swap Code
In action-replayed Super Smash Bros. Melee, the swap code enables a character to imitate the motion of another character. Imagine Jigglypuff and Mr. Game & Watch swap their motions... Puff would be choppy and GW would be puffy. Sounds entertaining!
Decrypted swap code: 1.0 / 1.1 / 1.2
US-encrypted swap code: 1.0 / 1.1 / 1.2
What's the problem? This code is crazily freezy. For instance, the game somehow freezes if Mario imitates Dr. Mario's kick. Since the odd couple Puff & GW makes a freezeless swap, you may see how tricky it is. Hope here becomes a handbook to enjoy it with less worry about freeze
Here, choose a character who imitates someone. If you want Luigi to imitate Mario, jump to the Luigi page first, and see the Mario list there
Mario / Dr. Mario / Luigi / Bowser / Peach / Yoshi / Donkey Kong / Captain Falcon / Ganondorf / Fox / Falco / Ness / Ice Climbers / Kirby / Samus / Zelda / Sheik / Link / Young Link / Pikachu / Pichu / Jigglypuff / Mewtwo / Mr. Game & Watch / Marth / Roy / Giga Bowser / Male Wire Frame / Female Wire Frame
- "match": how practically you can enjoy imitating melee
- "safe": action categories that may not cause freeze
- "frz": freezing actions you have to give attention to
I recorded freezing actions in Final Destination of Training Mode in ver 1.0/Japanese SSBM. You may find differences even in the same environment. An action might make no freeze for the 1st and 2nd times but the 3rd; I indeed encountered such mysteries
Motion imitation turns on/off when you press a command button on D-pad. A player who presses [Up] makes its character imitate the P1 character. In the same way, [Right] = P2, [Down] = P3, and [Left] = P4. Game freezes when you press an absent player's command
Imagine an example: P1 Mario and P2 Luigi are in a match with P3/P4 absent; you're using a P2 controller. Now, Luigi starts imitating Mario when you press D-pad [Up] and Luigi's original motion comes back when pressing D-pad [Right] (= imitating Luigi himself). Game freezes when pressing D-pad [Down] or [Left]
Imitating/imitated characters can be CPUs. That is, the commands above also go to a CPU character with a corresponding controller. Be careful with their freezing actions as well; of course they are not as tame as manual characters and might make freeze against the lists above
- Master/Crazy Hands cannot imitate others and cannot be imitated
- Sandbag can imitate others and can be imitated, both with a hell of a lot of freeze
- Characters cannot imitate Ice Climbers; motion becomes pauseful. Although Ice Climbers can imitate others, be careful with Nana's motion that also causes freeze
- When imitating Zelda, the opponent has to be Sheik at the beginning of the match, and vice versa
- Game freezes when a CPU Kirby in P2 swallows an opponent
- As a side effect of the swap code, attacks often hit distant opponents. Also, characters become poker-faced
- Characters cannot imitate physical ability such as running speed, jump height, traction, the ability of wall jump, and the count of midair jumps
- [A] attacks and [Z] grabs are imitated straightforward, whereas [B] special moves often make strange hybrid actions
- Characters just use intrinsic weapons and projectiles
- Voice and SE can be either the original or the imitated
- Hope you become a freeze-free imitator;)
